Hatchery vs. Wild Brook Trout

Raising the Brook Trout in our aquarium was comparable to raising trout in a hatchery. Here are some differences between hatchery raised trout and wild trout:

Timeline differences:
1st born- When the baby fish are just ejected out of the mother’s body they are eggs. The eggs get bigger, and then hatch. After they are called sac fries. This is because they have little sacs under their fish body. The fish gets bigger then loses it sack. After about 3 months it looks like a regular fish, except its very small. It takes 12-14 months to grow to a catchable size.

Survival rates: 20% of all fish that are hatched, live

Food:
· At a small age brook trout eat small aquatic insects that they can find in the wild.

· A adult brook trout has a wide ranged diet including blackflies, and micros.luding mayflies, salamanders, caddisflies, midges

What they need to live:
Brook Trout need a healthy habitat to survive. They need cold water that is 50 F (10-1 C), and clean water that is not chlorated and sedimenteded. The ph has to be 7 and the water has to be oxygenated. With oxygenated water you need a high level of dissolved oxygen (above 7 ppm). Food is very important. Brook trout eat a variety of different things like other fish, insects, macro-invertebrates, and more. The last thing is shelter. Gravel substance, boulders/woody debris, and shallow pools with vegetation is what makes up a good shelter for a brook trout.

Other differences:
The two main differences between wild brook trout and hatchery brook trout are…
Hatchery trouts heads are smaller than wild brook trout. The color of there heads are also different is wild trout show a darker cheek than hatchery trout do.
